You don’t have to live with orofacial pain
Frequent jaw and facial pain, difficulty opening and closing the mouth all of the way, headaches and earaches can be due to a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMD is characterized by pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and/or related chewing muscles. Because of the joints’ complexity, getting an accurate diagnosis is key. Thankfully, our dentists have the expertise to determine the underlying cause of your discomfort and offer solutions tailored to your needs.
Conservative treatment for TMJ pain
At Burtch Dental, we take a conservative approach to TMD treatment. Our expert dentists generally recommend trying reversible, non-invasive options before considering treatments like TMJ surgery. At our Kelowna dental clinic, we offer:
We can take digital scans of your teeth and use the computerized model to create a custom nightguard for you. The nightguard fits over your teeth and is meant to be worn at night while you’re sleeping. The oral appliance cushions against the forces from teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), which can cause or exacerbate TMJ pain, and also takes stress off the joints, helping them to heal.
Burtch Dental is a provider of Botox for TMJ pain. Your dentist injects Botox into the temporalis and masseter muscles, which are located on the side of the skull and the jaw, respectively. This temporarily relaxes the muscles, easing tension and soreness. Injections are often paired with other TMD treatments, such as homecare and a nightguard.
